I always fall in love at the Fairhope Art Show with the talent, art, and the town! This year it was several, as usual, but RiAnna Turner's waterfront impressions were a favorite, so was Keith Andry from Baton Rouge with his powerful swamp settings with herons and egrets. But I came home with two by Wanda Azzario-Goldberg (WAG) from Gulf Breeze with her bright and lively canvas. Links to each artist provided below, tell them I sent you.... won't get you a discount but I'll bet they'll will say, "I met that guy. He was a bit crazy about my canvas work." And by all means, ask Wanda and Alan about their time as Circus Entertainers!
Dawn Lee McKenna
Dawn Lee lost a long battle with cancer but her legacy continues thru an impressive array of Florida books. Her Forgotten Coast Series is a staple for summer reading on St George Island and the Downtown Books & Purl in Apalachicola still carries most all of them. Her series is included in SHUCKED UP as part of the plot and in remembrance of her body of work.
We met at her book signing there just a few years back. It was hot and muggy, just like a Gulf Coast day in June, but the line snaked around the shop, out the door, and down the block. Start with Low Tide this summer, meet up with Maggie Redmond at the Cafe con Leche, and let Dawn Lee tell you a story. Dawn Lee McKenna books are at www.amazon.com/Dawn-Lee-McKenna/e/B00RC14PPG%3Fref=dbs_a_mng_rwt_scns_share
Always a pleasure to browse the hand-picked selection at Downtown Books and Purl. Dale has a knack for knowing what sells and a soft spot for aspiring writers. Worth the drive just to say I bought "Saints of Old Florida" here plus several of the new "Forgotten Coast Mystery Series" by Dawn Lee McKenna. Never a bad day in Apalach if it includes a draft from Oyster City and a stiff nightcap at The Gibson; but it's incomplete if it doesn't include some time carousing the bookstore and a visit with Pam at Reel Memories.
Jesse McDermitt Series!
A marvelous new author in Florida Mysteries. I enjoyed the Wayne Stinnett Caribbean Adventure bundle! Great summer read while it's hot and muggy. I took my Advanced Open Water diving course in Big Pine Key with instructor Dick Danford. He spent his summers at Big Pine Campground and showed us how easy it was to love spearfishing the bridges, snorkeling Looe Key and the back country around the Content Keys. Reading the Jesse McDermitt series is a walk-through some fond memories. Find Wayne and all his books in order at waynestinnett.com/books/

Where is Doc Ford?
My personal favorite, Randy Wayne White is an outstanding keeper of the Florida Mystery tradition.
My pilgrimage to Dinkin's Bay and the Sanibel area was completed in September 2020! Great stay on Captiva with the folks at Jensen's Marina. Superb photos from Ding Darling Wildlife and a shell book from "she sells sea shells". Several dinners at Doc Ford's Grille for a chance to meet Randy and Wendy but it didn't happen...next time!
Finished Caribbean Rim... catching up with Doc and Tomlinson is a summer pleasure. SALT RIVER is next in the pile and you can find it at http://www.randywaynewhite.com

Looking for Travis Magee!
Last I heard, he was still in Cedar Key. At least, that's what J. Buffett said in "Incommunicado".
John D. MacDonald left us a treasure of 21 Florida Mysteries. Start here.... your local library with "The Deep Blue Goodbye". We're all still learning from the master.

Finding Skink...
Former Florida governor, environmental champion, frog-licker, and moral compass for some of the wildest, the funniest mysteries by Carl Hiassen, the steward of the Florida mystery. Looking forward to more from Carl now that he's announced his retirement from the Miami Herald. Find his newest book Wrecker for MG readers at Carl Hiaasen's webpage http://www.carlhiaasen.com |
